Céline Dion adopted a brilliantly bonkers new style just in time for her 50th birthday. A few years on, and she’s still going strong.
Céline Dion’s style changed dramatically in 2017 when at the age of 49, she hired the stylist Law Roach to help her transform her image. The pop icon, who had been wedded to an unexciting, often cheesy sense of style since the 1990s, became Vogue’s unlikely new muse almost overnight, invited to sit front row at the couture shows in Paris, and building a new fan base on Instagram of followers keen to see her next fashion trick.
In the three years since, Dion has kept up the pace, enjoying being the first to embrace every bold new catwalk look, every micro trend, and every fashion fantasy item. Dion is fearless when it comes to style, experimenting with bold colors and new silhouettes – her confidence, it seems is unmatched. Crucially, it looks like she has a lot of fun when she gets dressed in the morning – and that’s something to celebrate.
Here, on her 52nd birthday, we look back at 11 of her bonkers, joy-bringing outfits…
1. Giambattista Valli
Let’s begin with the outfit which started it all. Dion caught the fashion media’s attention in July 2017 when she was invited to Couture Fashion Week in Paris for the first time and gave a standing ovation from her spot on the front row to the designer Giambattista Valli while wearing one of his gowns. The typically stoic audience of editors and influencers couldn’t help but smile as she cheered. She has soon declared a new symbol of fun in fashion.
2. Oscar de la Renta
Jumping forward to 8th March 2020, you can see how much Dion’s look has evolved. Out and about in New York, she opted for a floral puffball skirt and cream jumper – the full outfit was from Oscar de la Renta’s autumn 2020 catwalk show, and won’t be available for anyone else to buy until later this year. With her hair blow-dried in voluminous loose waves, the overall effect emulated Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City – no doubt a deliberate reference for her trip.
3. Richard Quinn
Dion is a style chameleon – one day she can look pin-sharp, or ladylike, the next she could be in head-to-toe prints or wearing a huge OTT silhouette. On the same trip to New York in March 2020, she wore this Sixties-inspired look by British designer Richard Quinn for the Italian luxury house Moncler. She styled her hair like a bob, added perspex black sunglasses, and white Gianvito Rossi heels.
4. Christian Siriano
Another pivotal moment for Dion was this Christian Siriano gown, which she wore to the premiere of Beauty and the Beast in 2017. She had not long been working with Law Roach, and the silhouette was considered very experimental for her at the time.
“My feeling is that women should be able to wear whatever they want,” Roach told The Telegraph. “Whatever it is, if it makes you feel beautiful and confident and secure, then you wear it. I don’t think it’s fair for people like myself, supposed authorities, to say that if you’re this age or this shape, then you should only wear this. If it makes you walk taller and your head held high, then you wear it.”
5. Ronald Van Der Kemp
At the Paris couture shows in July 2019, Dion experimented with another run of outre outfits in front of the waiting street style photographers. This Ronald Van Der Kemp jacket and ruffled yellow mini skirt show how committed she is to switching up her silhouette – and she regularly reiterates her message that anyone can wear anything they like.
Dion accessorized a $6,000 black Chanel unitard with a statement crystal belt in July 2019, tapping into logomania and again emphasizing her versatility. American Vogue said she “put her own stamp on the risk-taking summer trend.”
7. Iris Van Herpen
In July 2019, Dion wore this avant-garde dress by couture designer Iris Van Herpen in Paris. The material is a pleated netting and was wrangled for her by her new styling team Sydney Lopez and Pepe Muñoz.
8. Peter Do
On her trip to New York in March 2020, Dion debuted another full look from a new designer, Peter Do. Do previously worked at the Parisian fashion house Celine under Phoebe Philo – wearing his statement-making, skirt-over-trousers fuchsia suiting was a way to offer publicity to the new brand, as well as align Dion with up-and-coming talents.
9. Oscar de la Renta
The theme for the 2019 Met Gala was ‘camp’ fashion, and Dion went all out. In a fringed Oscar de la Renta gown and matching feathered headdress, the singer fully embraced the night’s dress code.
Sometimes Dion tones it down – relatively. In July 2019, one of her most memorable outfits was this Valentino feathered dress, which was light in color and worn with soft hair and metallic accessories.
The first time one of Dion’s outfits went viral was in July 2016, when Law Roach dressed her in a Titanic sweatshirt by of-the-moment new label Vetements, around the 20th anniversary of the film’s release. “To be honest I was afraid to show her it as I thought that she might think it was cheesy and tacky,” Roach told The Telegraph. “She said, “I want to wear it right now!”
